Susan Richardson
Susan Richardson was in captivity with her three sons, and they eventually escaped from their captors. Her sons were caught, and the captors gave her a choice to either go with her sons back to captivity or abandon them and take her freedom. She chose to take her freedom, and abandoned her three sons and became a seamstress. She eventually got her certificate of freedom and opened up a store. Susan Richardson and her past relates to Knox College and majority of the undergraduates' identities as both subjects seek this opportunity of a new start in life, while also sacrificing something or someone dearest to them. While Susan Richardson sacrificed her three sons for her freedom and a new start in life, students here at Knox College can relate to the controversial choice of abandoning her sons. Although students at Knox College weren’t really fleeing from captors, they were potentially escaping issues and problems at home, and had to sacrifice leaving either pets, friends, and/or family members behind to start a new life. While students aren’t necessarily becoming seamstresses, similar to Susan Richardson, they are obtaining degrees in desired areas of study to make a living and become successful in life, like Susan Richardson with her career and store. Although there are major differences between the events of students coming to Knox College and Susan Richardson fleeing from her captors, both the students and Susan can relate to the feeling and emotions both subjects had to experience in making this extremely difficult decision and sacrificing something they loved dearly.
