Susan Richardson's Story
After escaping from her captors, Susan 'Aunt Sukey' Richardson was a prominent figure in the abolitionist movement taking part in Galesburg at the time. She operated a Underground Railway safehouse as a 'conductor' where she would help escaped slaves. With this and the growing black population in Knox county, she was known for as a key figure in the black community because of the morning prayers she would hold at her own home. Later on she also went on to help establish the oldest African-American church in Knox County, A.M.E. Allen Church where it's still located for worshippers to visit to this date.
